Despite limited resources, PEHOPS has successfully trained community members in effective beekeeping management techniques. As part of the commitment to empowering these communities, PEHOPS has donated 380 beehives to 28 groups, providing them with the necessary tools to kickstart their beekeeping ventures. Additionally, has offered beekeeping training on how to construct beehives using locally available materials, ensuring that the practice is sustainable and accessible to all.
To further support these communities, PEHOPS also acts as an off taker, providing a market for their honey and bee products. This holistic approach not only fosters economic growth but also promotes environmental sustainability. PEHOPS, is located in Malawi where deforestation is rampant. PEHOPS is also implementing a unique approach by renting trees from individuals in 35 communities of Malawi, especially those not directly involved in beekeeping. These trees are used to hang beehives for both the PEHOPS social enterprise and local community members who lack suitable locations to install their own beehives. Tree owners receive payment of MK 5000(EUR 4) per tree after each honey harvesting cycle, providing them with a sustainable income stream instead of resorting to tree cutting. This arrangement allows them to earn from the trees every 3-6 months. As such are not cutting down the trees PEHOPS is helping secondary school students to start beekeeping businesses to earn money for their school fees. This initiative provides valuable skills and promotes entrepreneurship while supporting their education.
